Ekiti University Expels Student in Viral Video Bullying Colleague
The management of the Bamidele Olumilua University of Education Science and Technology Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI) has expelled a female student caught in a viral video flogging her colleague.
The incident occurred on Monday when a clip circulated on social media, capturing the student assaulting her colleague with a cane. In the footage, the perpetrator is heard berating the victim, saying: “I want to see you fight back. You called me a bastard? Is it because I have kept silent? I must draw blood from you today and no one can stop me”.
The victim is seen running to safety as her attacker chases her. The video also showed several individuals present during the assault, but no one attempted to intervene.
The footage provoked outrage on social media, prompting calls for the institution to investigate the incident.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the university announced that Opemiposi Precious Bolaji, the 18-year-old student of the Department of Mass Communication who was the perpetrator, has been expelled.
The school also expelled Genesis Osaro, another Mass Communication student who provided the stick used to beat Gloria Ajayi, the victim. Ajayi, however, was exonerated as she did not retaliate or engage in the physical altercation.
The university reiterated its “zero tolerance for all forms of indiscipline” within the school premises, warning that anyone who witnesses or experiences harassment, abuse or violence against a student should report it immediately to the appropriate authorities.
