Akire Takes Up Classroom Duty to Address Teachers Shortage
The Akire of Ikire-Ile, Osun State, Oba Abdulazeez Olatubosun, has returned to the teaching profession to address the shortage of teachers in schools in Osun State.
Oba Olatubosun, who was a Mathematics lecturer at the Osun State College, Ila-Orangun, taught the Senior School Two {SS2}and SS3 students of The Wings Schools, Iwo, Osun State, Mathematics, on Sunday.
The royal father taught the students Solutions to Aptitude Test, the Real Number System and Quadratic Equations while the students requested the monarch to teach them topics like Surd,Sequences and Series, probability and others in subsequent classes. The monarch promised to be coming to the school once a week.
The royal father said the teaching was just to complement the efforts of teachers, saying the school has competent teachers.
Speaking on how to address shortage of teachers, the king urged the government to recruit younger qualified teachers and give them incentives to retain them and get the best out of them.
Also, a former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission {INEC}, Prof. Lai Olurode and Dr. Dikrullahi Olurode of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, called for improved welfare packages and more motivation for teachers in order to attract more and brilliant people into the teaching to fill the shortage.
Prof. Olurode, who is the proprietor of the school, said the management of schools is conscious of the shortage of teachers in schools, adding: ‘’Teaching is a job most people don’t want to do. When you see a typical teacher, what comes to your mind is poverty, what comes to mind is somebody that is not respected by the society. The situation of teachers is lamentable. Even the students don’t want to learn. When I was teaching I asked them if they wanted to become teachers or professors, they said no. To address the shortage of teachers, the government needs to motivate them and improve on their welfare packages’’.
To the students, the professor said: ‘’It is not enough to be lamenting about our challenges. The monarch said he would come here to impart knowledge every week. This is to touch lives, to add values and impact lives and for students to imbibe the spirit of volunteering. All of you must do something to inspire the society. It is to spur others to come out and teach’’.
On his part, Dr. Dikrullahi Olurode harped on the need for the government to prioritise the welfare of lecturers and teachers, adding that the country could only get better when the adequate investment was made on human capital development and education.
The principal of The Wings Schools, Mr. Taoheed Sanusi, expressed happiness and great delight to receive the Akire.
