In a rare public moment of camaraderie, Nigerian political heavyweights—President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in 2023 general election, and former Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi—were seen exchanging warm greetings during Pope Leo XIV’s installation mass held on Sunday in Rome.
The unexpected gathering of the Nigerian political trio took place within the hallowed walls of the Vatican, drawing attention back home and abroad.
According to a post shared by President Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was Fayemi who initiated the meeting after spotting the President seated among other dignitaries.
In a gesture of respect and fraternity, Fayemi encouraged Obi to join him in greeting the President.
Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence,” Fayemi said, breaking the ice.
President Tinubu, known for his wit, responded with a smile: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.”
The response reportedly drew laughter from Obi, who responded in kind: “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”
Both Obi and Fayemi are devout Catholics and Papal knights, underscoring the significance of their presence at the historic religious occasion. While the meeting was brief, it offered a rare glimpse of civility and unity among Nigeria’s top political figures—if only for a moment—on foreign soil.
