The Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.5 billion as financial support for victims and survivors of the Bodija explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that the amount is in addition to over ₦200 million already spent by the state on accommodation, feeding, medical care, and security following the incident.
The Council also approved a recommendation by a 10-member committee to revoke the titles of two properties located off Adeyi Avenue, the site of the explosion. A monument is expected to be built on the revoked land in memory of the victims.
The Council expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and false claims regarding the government’s role in the aftermath of the explosion. It described such reports as misleading and reaffirmed its commitment to a fair and thorough response.
Oyelade noted that some beneficiaries of the relief funds were involved in family disputes, which the committee is currently working to resolve.
The government also plans to return ownership of other properties near the explosion site to their original owners, allowing them to rebuild based on guidance from government-appointed structural engineers.
He added that the Ministry of Justice will continue prosecuting suspects already arraigned in connection with the explosion, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others still at large.
Meanwhile, during the Executive Council session, Governor Seyi Makinde addressed rumours of a cabinet reshuffle. He clarified that the move aims to enhance efficiency and that no cabinet member would be dropped unless found to be distracted or underperforming.
The governor reiterated his commitment to sustaining the momentum of his administration through to the end of his tenure in 2027.
