The Nigeria Copyright Commission has announced the commission’s plan to launch a developed model manual for media practioners in the country

Director General ,NCC, Dr. John Asein stated this at a media parley with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held at Habeeb Olamitoye hall, Iyaganku, Press Centre, Ibadan.

NCC Director General Dr. John Asein, explained that the commission was passionate about intervening in the knowledge and creative knowledge system and that many media practitioners are contending with issues of ownership and copyright with their employers and other entities.

He noted that the manual would guide them in their contractual agreement before releasing their works for publication and broadcast to avoid future litigations

“First owner of the copyright is the author subject to any agreement between the Author and the employer but we need to consider what happens if the author or publisher dies. What happened to the rich resources”

Asein, while soliciting the partnership of journalists to curtail the activity of pirates in Nigeria, stressed that the support of journalists is vital in achieving the NCC’s goals and bringing offenders to justice.

He highlighted the commission’s authority to arrest and prosecute copyright offenders saying the NCC enjoys robust collaboration with all security agencies in Nigeria.

“We all share a responsibility in stamping out copyright infringements, the commission has the power to search, arrest, and prosecute, we rely on the police, Nigeria Customs Service, NSCDC, and other security agencies for smooth operation.”
