The family of veteran Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist, Deborah Adebola Fasoyin, has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming she has died, describing the information as false and misleading.
Rumours of the singer’s death began trending online early Monday, raising concern among her fans and members of the Nigerian gospel music community. Several posts alleged that the respected choir leader had passed away at the age of 86.
However, a member of her family who spoke to the media clarified that the reports were entirely untrue, stressing that the gospel icon is alive and in good health.
“The news is completely fake and baseless. Mama is hale, hearty and healthy. There is no truth to the rumours being spread,” the family source said, urging the public to ignore the claims.
Deborah Adebola Fasoyin is widely recognised as one of the pioneers of indigenous Yoruba gospel music. She gained national prominence as the leader of the Good Women Choir of the Christ Apostolic Church in Ibadan, a group known for its spiritually uplifting hymns and traditional gospel songs.
Born on March 1, 1940, in Oyo Town, Fasoyin developed a passion for music at a young age after joining a church choir.
Over the years, she played a key role in transforming the CAC Good Women Choir into a nationally recognised gospel group, with numerous recordings and performances across Nigeria.
One of the choir’s most popular songs, “Odun Nlo Sopin,” became a household anthem in many Nigerian homes, particularly during end-of-year celebrations. The choir has released more than 25 albums, further cementing Fasoyin’s legacy in Nigeria’s gospel music scene.
Despite her age, the veteran gospel minister remains an influential figure in Christian ministry and continues to inspire younger gospel artistes and worship leaders across the country.
Her family has therefore appealed to the public to verify information before sharing it online, while also asking fans to continue praying for the gospel icon.
“Mama is doing well,” the source reiterated. “There is no cause for alarm.”
