The visit ended with prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in Nigeria and Adamawa State
The Committee of Heads of Federal Government Establishments in Adamawa State has visited the Jimeta Medium Correctional Centre to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day, donating relief items to inmates and urging them to remain hopeful and prepare for a better future.
The delegation was led by the committee’s chairman and federal controller, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Adamawa State, Bilda Martin Gyado. He was represented by Pharmacist Umar Lawan, State Officer, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, who delivered his address.
Lawan said the visit provided an opportunity for the committee to identify with inmates and share in the spirit of the Independence Day celebration. He described them as an important part of society and urged them not to lose hope, stressing that their present circumstances were only a phase of their lives.
He encouraged the inmates to use their time for reflection, personal development, learning, and rehabilitation to enable them return to their families and communities with renewed purpose.
Other members of the committee, including Hajiya Safiya Abubakar, Federal Controller, Federal Ministry of Environment, Adamawa State; Abdurrahman Abubakar, Head of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Adamawa State; and Dr Ajani Abidemi, also encouraged the inmates to remain hopeful.
Abubakar appealed to relevant authorities to provide inmates with greater access to education, including schools, university programmes, JAMB, and other educational development initiatives.
He said access to education would support the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.
Responding on behalf of the Controller-General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, and the Adamawa State Controller of Corrections, CC Abduljalil Odunlami, the Welfare Officer of the centre, ASCI Tayo Keddy, appreciated the committee for the gesture.
Keddy said the visit and donation demonstrated concern for the welfare and dignity of inmates while stressing the importance of support from organizations and individuals for their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The committee distributed noodles, toothpaste, soap, detergents, and other essential materials to the inmates, who expressed appreciation for the gesture.
