The Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division, has dismissed an appeal filed by Union Bank of Nigeria Plc challenging the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Ibadan Judicial Division, in a suit involving 62 former employees of the bank.
In a lead judgment delivered on Monday, August 17, 2026, Justice Abdul Dogo held that all the issues raised by Union Bank had been resolved against the appellant, adding that the appeal therefore failed and was dismissed.
The court affirmed the November 5, 2024 judgment of the National Industrial Court in Suit No. NICN/IB/42/2023 and awarded N500,000 costs against the bank in favour of the respondents.
The judgment was also endorsed by Justices Ridwan Maiwada Abdullahi and Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole, who affirmed the orders and costs contained in the lead judgment.
The respondents, who are former employees of Union Bank, had challenged the circumstances surrounding the termination of their employment between 2006 and 2008.
They had argued before the National Industrial Court that they were compulsorily retired before attaining the stipulated retirement age or completing the prescribed years of service, contending that their exit from the bank constituted redundancy.
They further maintained that the redundancy was governed by the collective agreement between the Nigeria Employers Association of Banks, Insurance and Allied Institutions and the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions.
The National Coordinator of Aggrieved Pensioners of UBN Plc, Mr Onu Augustine, said the group was appealing to members of the public, human rights organisations, faith-based organisations and other lovers of humanity to urge Union Bank to comply with the judgments of the courts.
He called for the prompt and appropriate implementation of the court’s decisions, following the dismissal of the bank’s appeal by the Court of Appeal.
