The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has received the Golden Sports Icon Award from the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter.
Receiving the accolade in Abuja, Dr Tunji-Ojo commended the leadership of SWAN for honouring outstanding sports ambassadors in Ondo State.
The minister said it is good that an organized association like SWAN was keeping performance record of those that had done well and brought smiles onto the faces of people of the State and Nigeria as well, in the area of sports.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo recalled his youthful days when Adura Olalehin, Seun Ogunkoya among others were the leading sports actors in their own rights, urging for a reenactment of such moments in the State
He also used the opportunity to call on the Association to always raise awareness on issues that would engender sports development in the state and country at large.
Earlier, Chairman of SWAN in Ondo State, Segun Giwa, appreciated Tunji-Ojo for his support for sports development at the grassroots, especially the organization of a sports festival in the five zones of the state.
Giwa urged the minister to consider more investment in the sporting sector as part of his love and support for youth development in the state.
The Ondo State chapter of SWAN had on September 23 organised the Ondo @50 Award for Sports icons namely athletes, sports administrators, coaches, sponsors, journalists, organizations and others who had contributed immensely to the development of sports in the state and Nigeria over the past years.
The Award and Gala Night had held at the NMA House in Alagbaka, Akure, with the Minister unable to attend due to the exigency of duty.
