At least 20 athletes from the Kano State contingent have been confirmed dead following a devastating motor accident at Dakavlle Bridge in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State. The athletes were returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, confirmed the fatal crash, stating that the bus, which was conveying 30 athletes, fell off the bridge on Saturday.
As I am talking to you now, we have counted 19 dead bodies,“Fagge reported, noting that several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Ado Salisu, a former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), added that victims were still being rushed to Kura General Hospital.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Relations Officer for the Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, also confirmed the incident but stated that the agency was still gathering details and could not confirm the exact number of casualties.
Authorities are continuing rescue and investigation efforts.
