Reps Committee Assesses Ogoni Cleanup Projects

The House of Representatives Committee on Host Communities has given the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, an 80 per cent performance rating following a two-day oversight visit to cleanup projects across Ogoni land.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Dumnamene Dekor, who led the delegation, expressed satisfaction over the progress in potable water supply, environmental remediation, mangrove restoration, healthcare delivery and livelihood development in the Ogoni land.

The committee also inspected other projects, including the Ogoni Power Project, the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration, the 100-bed Ogoni Specialist Hospital, water facilities and remediation sites.

The Committee also commended HYPREP’s livelihood training programme for 2,400 Ogoni women and youths, alongside other job creation and public health interventions.

The committee urged residents to protect the projects and use them judiciously while cautioning against misinformation capable of undermining the cleanup programme.

HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, described the assessment as an encouragement to sustain efforts towards delivering the programme’s objectives.

The oversight visit highlights the National Assembly’s continued monitoring of the Ogoni cleanup project to ensure lasting environmental recovery and improved wellbeing for residents.
