The Presidency has sharply criticised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its recent remarks concerning the state burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the party’s statement as “opportunistic” and “dishonest.”
In a press release issued on Saturday and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, the Presidency accused the ADC of using Buhari’s death for political attention and attempting to discredit the Federal Government’s handling of the burial.
“Their latest press release, alleging that President Tinubu’s government is ‘exploiting’ the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari for political gain, is not only dishonest — it is an insult to millions of Nigerians who genuinely mourn the loss of a statesman,” the statement read.
The ADC had earlier alleged that the Tinubu administration was politicising the former president’s death, a claim the Presidency dismissed as baseless and misleading. It described the ADC as “a poorly amalgamated political contraption” and accused it of routinely issuing “disjointed press statements” to remain visible.
Dare defended the state burial accorded to Buhari, saying it was conducted with full honour and in line with national dignity, noting that world leaders and millions of Nigerians participated in mourning the former president.
Highlighting several achievements of the Tinubu administration, including improvements in exchange rate stability, oil production, infrastructure delivery, and the rollout of the NELFUND student loan scheme, the Presidency said its focus remains on results, not political distractions.
The statement also took aim at leading opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of seeking political capital during the burial events in Daura.
“This government would rather allow its growing list of achievements to speak louder than the noisy irrelevance of groups like the ADC,” the statement added.
The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the ADC’s claims and reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to national development and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
