The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Oyo State Chapter has called on public and private universities to set up special monitoring team to check activities in their hostels

In a statement by the chairperson of Oyo Nawoj, Mrs Omolola Alamu, while reacting to the torture and killing of a student at Ajayi Crowther university in the university hostel, Alamu decried the spate of insecurity in some Nigeria’s Tertiary institutions in recent times.

Reports have it that last weekend, Alex Timilehin, a 22 year-old 200 level Mechanical Engineering student of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, was beaten by a group of students in a room of the school hostel ‘Shepherd Inn’ for eight hours till he died.

Alamu, expressed disappointment at the way management of some tertiary institutions especially private universities handle the security of students in their care stressing that the campus should be a safe abode for students and not a death trap

“In this month alone, two heartbreaking incidents happen in that school alone, a female student was raped by security guards on that same campus, last weekend, another killing, how can a hostel be left unchecked for eight hours, from 6pm to 10am where they beat him and even shaved his hair till the helpless boy gave up the ghost?”

Alamu called on private and public tertiary institutions to rejigg their security strategy by setting up measures to conduct periodic check on students in the hostel so as to arrest unhealthy behaviour in their campuses

Alamu however commiserate with the family of the student and prayed God to give them fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
