The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called for an end to all forms of impunity against journalists, urging governments, security agencies, institutions and individuals to respect press freedom and protect media professionals in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
The Council made the call in commemoration of this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, stressing that “a free, independent, and fearless press remains fundamental to democracy, accountability and good governance.”
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Akeem Abas, and the Secretary, Temidayo Adu, the Council emphasised that journalists must be allowed to perform their professional duties without barriers, intimidation, harassment, threats, assault or unlawful arrest.
It condemned every attempt to obstruct journalists, deny them access to information, or prevent them from covering events of public interest, noting that “such actions undermine democratic principles and deprive citizens of their right to information.*
The union called on relevant authorities to ensure that attacks against journalists are thoroughly investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.
It maintained that failure to prosecute offenders encourages further violations and creates an atmosphere of fear capable of weakening journalism and public accountability.
The Oyo NUJ also urged media organisations to prioritise the safety and welfare of their staff, particularly those covering sensitive assignments and public demonstrations.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to “defending the rights, dignity and professional independence of journalists in Oyo State and beyond.”
Oyo NUJ urged stakeholders to strengthen mechanisms for press freedom protection, promote responsible journalism and ensure that journalists can operate in an atmosphere devoid of fear and persecution.
The Council stressed that ending impunity against journalists is a collective responsibility essential to sustaining democracy and safeguarding public interest.
