The Oyo State Real Properties Protection Law Agency has disclosed that it received a total of 2,215 petitions relating to forceful take-over of landed properties, otherwise known as land grabbing, across the state in the last two years.
Chairman of the agency, Justice Olajumoke Aiki (rtd), made this known while giving an update on the agency’s activities. She revealed that 860 of the petitions have been successfully resolved so far.
Justice Aiki stated that the state government has made deliberate efforts to strengthen the agency to arrest and prosecute suspected notorious land offenders, in line with the Oyo State Real Properties Protection Law of 2016.
She explained that records show a total of 3,363 forms have been obtained by complainants since the agency began full operations, adding that 143 petition files have been arraigned in court, while 480 offenders have been prosecuted for land grabbing-related offences.
According to her, 125 petition files are currently being kept in view, noting that the majority of the cases were recorded between 2023 and 2025, after the agency commenced skeletal operations in 2022.
Responding to recent commendations received by the agency, Justice Aiki attributed its achievements to the support and leadership of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde, deserves all the accolades for the privilege given to us to serve the good people of Oyo State. Without his support with funds, operational materials and goodwill, we would not have achieved this much,” she said.
She cited a letter of commendation from the Balogun Iyalode of Ibadanland, Chief Taye Soyege, whose petition involving a land dispute in Ido Local Government Area was thoroughly investigated by the agency.
In the letter, Chief Soyege commended the agency for its “discipline, professionalism, and selflessness,” adding that its officers displayed “great courage and commitment to duty.”
Similarly, the Religious Sisters of Charity under the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan expressed appreciation to the agency for its fair handling of a land dispute case filed against the congregation by one Mr. Kazeem Lasisi.
Investigations by the agency’s Task Force Unit found insufficient evidence to support the petitioner’s allegations of land grabbing and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
Justice Aiki reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to upholding fairness, professionalism, and integrity in the handling of land-related disputes across the state.
