The Chairman of the Ondo State Sports Council, Hon. Abimbola Oladimeji, has ordered the immediate commencement of renovation work on the Olympic-standard swimming pool at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
Oladimeji described the deplorable condition of the facility as unacceptable, lamenting years of neglect and inadequate maintenance that had rendered the swimming pool unfit for sporting activities.
The chairman disclosed this while addressing members of the Ondo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Akure.
According to him, the swimming pool, which was built to international standards, had suffered prolonged neglect and required urgent rehabilitation to restore it to its intended purpose.
He said the renovation of the pool would be completed within the next few weeks, adding that sports writers and other stakeholders would be invited to inspect the facility as part of efforts to demonstrate the administration’s renewed commitment to sports development in the state.
Oladimeji also solicited the cooperation of members of SWAN, saying the association had an important role to play in publicising achievements recorded under his leadership.
“I have ordered the commencement of the renovation work at some sections of the stadium, starting from the Olympic-standard swimming pool,” he said.
He added that renovation work had also commenced at the stadium entrance, including the re- fixing of the gates.
“We are going to work together to achieve greatness in the development and discovery of talents for sporting glory in the state,” he said.
Oladimeji assumed office on Monday and has since commenced renovation work at various sections of the sports complex as part of efforts to improve sporting infrastructure and create a conducive environment for athletes.
The Chairman of SWAN in Ondo State, Segun Giwa, assured Oladimeji and members of his board of the association’s support and cooperation towards the overall development of sports in the state.
