The National Youth Service Commission, NYSC, has cautioned corps employers against act of connivance with corps members to play truancy and evade national service.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Nafiu Olakunle gave the caution in his address to the 2025 Corps Employers’ Workshop held at the Oyo State NYSC Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan
Brigadier Olakunle whose address was read by Mrs. Christiana Afolayan from the Directorate of southwest Area office, emphasized that employers must not become enablers of truancy, stressing the need for employers to uphold the integrity of the scheme by encouraging discipline and accountability among corps members.
The NYSC DG also enjoined the employers not to give travelling approval to corps members except such application is cleared by the state director, in line with NYSC regulations.
Declaring the workshop open, the Chairman, stae NYSC Governing board and Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Miss Wosilat Adegoke, charged corps employers to support the scheme in all capacities to to ensure its relevance and sustainability.
Delivering a presentation on the topic: “Emotional Intelligence as a Requisite Skill in Managing Corps Members in the Workplace: The Employers’ Perspective.” Dr Akinyemi Adeyemi from the University of Ibadan, counselled the employers to expose the corps members to official skills that would make them employable after the one year mandatory national service.
Two Corps Employers, Mrs. Grace Olubunmi and Pastor Ayokunnu Ogunmefun in separte interviews, expressed gladness at the workshop, saying the interface had given them new insights into effectively mentoring of corps members and promoting positive values.
Earlier, in an address of welcome, the state coordinator, NYSC in oyo state, Mr. Peters Kayode, said the workshop was designed to strengthen the mutually beneficial relationship between the NYSC and corps employers, urging them to collaborate more closely with the scheme to raise a generation of disciplined, patriotic, and empowered youths.
