As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, the Society for Journalism Enhancement Initiatives (S4JEI) has hailed the contributions of Nigerian journalists to national development and global discourse.
In a congratulatory message dated June 12, 2025, and addressed to NUJ President, Mallam Alhassan Yahya, S4JEI Convener, Dr. Gbemiga Bamidele, described the Platinum Jubilee as a significant milestone.
Bamidele praised the Union’s resilience since its existence on March 15, 1955, and acknowledged the pivotal role journalists have played in advancing human rights, social justice, and democratic governance in Nigeria.
The Nigerian press has been at the forefront of the struggle for human dignity, human rights and social welfare,” Dr. Bamidele noted. He highlighted the press’s historical role in challenging colonial rule and post-independence authoritarianism.
He paid tribute to pioneering figures in Nigerian journalism, including the first NUJ President Mobolaji Odunewu, first General Secretary Olu Oyesanya, and nationalist icons such as Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, while acknowledging Veteran journalist Sam Amuka.
Dr. Bamidele urged the current NUJ leadership to uphold the legacy of excellence and continue steering the Union toward greater achievements.
