NPC Begins Research To Unravel Causes of Maternal – Child Mortality in Oyo State
The National Population Commission, NPC has flagged off a research study to unravel the contributory factors responsible for Maternal -Child mortality in Oyo State.
The study known as the 2024 Verbal and Social Autopsy, VASA, is to be carried out across 22 local government areas of Oyo State.
Federal Commissioner, NPC, Oyo State, Dr Eyitayo Oyetunji who stated this at a News Briefing, held at the state office said the 2024 edition of VASA would cover Women of child-bearing age, neonatal and child mortality in seventy households within the five zones in the state.
Dr Oyetunji who lauded the Oyo State government for improved health indices, charged the VASA team to be tactful and sensitive, saying issues of mortality could bring back sad memories to the respondents.
Representing Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetumobi, the Director Health Planning and Statistics in the ministry, Dr Gbolahan Abass restated the state Government’s resolve to ensure zero maternal -infant mortality in Oyo State.
Dr Ajetumobi reiterated that the VASA study would assist the state in proper planning for development.
In an address, NPC State Director, Mr Olayide Adebayo urged all stakeholders, community leaders and rural dwellers to cooperate with the members of the Research Team by providing the needed information.
Speaking on the modalities of the study, Director VASA TEAM Oyo, Ogun Lagos, Alhaja Samiat Lawal said the team would commence the field work from Surulere in Ogbomoso, before moving to Ibarapa, Okeogun, Saki and Oyo.
Alhaja Lawal added that the study which kicked off December 2, would end on the 15th of this month.
