As Nigerians commemorate the June 12 Democracy Day, the Mass Communication Alumni of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree (MAOS), has called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts towards ending kidnapping, banditry and other security challenges facing the country.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Adekunle Sikiru, popularly known as Abacus, the association said the benefits of democracy can only be fully realized when citizens are guaranteed safety and freedom.
MAOS expressed concern over the increasing cases of abductions and violent attacks across the country, noting that insecurity continues to cause hardship for many families and hinder national development.
The association sympathized with families of victims still in captivity and expressed hope that ongoing security operations would lead to their safe return. It also commended security personnel for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation and urged them to remain committed to their duties.
While celebrating the gains of democratic governance, MAOS appealed to the Federal Government to strengthen intelligence gathering, provide adequate support for security agencies and implement lasting measures to address insecurity.
The alumni body also condemned recent political clashes reported in Osogbo, Ile-Ife, Owode-Ede, Oriade and other parts of Osun State. It warned political actors against allowing their ambitions to endanger lives and property.
MAOS urged political parties to embrace issue-based campaigns and democratic values, stressing that Osun State’s reputation for peace must not be undermined by partisan interests.
The association further called on the Osun State Government and security agencies to maintain law and order through proactive measures and adequate deployment of personnel to identified flashpoints.
MAOS reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible communication, peaceful coexistence and national unity, expressing confidence that Nigeria can overcome its security challenges through collective efforts, responsible leadership and sustained commitment to democratic ideals.
