IDGC 2024: Ondo NAWOJ Urges Parents on Girl Child Mentorship
As the International Day of the Girl-Child is being celebrated worldwide, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, (NAWOJ), Ondo State chapter has called on parents and caregivers to ensure the security of their girls and mentor them aright.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chairperson of the Association, Comrade Tola Gbadamosi and Secretary, Oluwatosin Ighoteguono in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
The Association adds that it is important to note that every girl child not be deprived of formal education even as they play multiple roles in the household, society and the economy.
In line with this year’s theme, “Girls’ Vision for the Future.’” which focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment as well as the fulfilment of their human rights, Ondo NAWOJ indicates that there is the need to educate the girl child about their rights, help them make healthy choices, protect them from violence especially rape and teach them to be enviable leaders.”
While felicitating girls on the day, Ondo NAWOJ assured them of unwavering support as they inspire, innovate and take charge of their own future.
The association warned parents on the dangers of lack of mentorship and monitoring of the girl- child, saying there are wolves in human clothing, prowling, and ready to devour.
Ondo NAWOJ posits, that, there has been increased attention on issues that matter to girls amongst governments, policymakers and the general public, and more opportunities for girls to have their voices heard on the global stage In these last 15 years.
The Female Journalists frown at the level at which Girls around the world continue to face unprecedented challenges to their education, their physical and mental wellness, and the protections needed for a life without violence.
The Association further urges governments to ensure every girl child has access to education required to build a better life for her.
Ondo NAWOJ also appeals to parents not to neglect their responsibilities to their children, but properly educate them irrespective of their gender adding that, educating children about issues of life and the rights and privileges they should enjoy would guide them in their journey in life.
