Ibadan Student Death: Officer Who Fired Fatal Shot Apprehended – Police

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that the officer responsible for the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade during a joint traffic enforcement operation has been apprehended and is currently in custody.

The incident, which occurred in the morning of Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at the Airport Roundabout, Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road in Egbeda LGA, has drawn widespread public attention and sorrow.

According to the official police statement, the officer, identified as a corporal, discharged a firearm while attempting to stop a fleeing vehicle, fatally striking the teenage boy who was seated in the back of the car.

The vehicle, a black Honda Accord driven by Kehinde’s father, Odunayo Alade, had reportedly been driving against traffic and refused to comply with orders from traffic officials and police officers.

The police alleged the driver attempted to evade arrest, ramming multiple enforcement vehicles and breaching barricades, prompting suspicions of a possible abduction or other criminal activity.

In an effort to demobilised the vehicle, the corporal fired a shot aimed at the tires, but the bullet tragically struck Kehinde.

He was rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have since been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital for autopsy.

Reacting swiftly, Commissioner of Police Johnson Adenola deployed tactical and intelligence units to stabilize the scene and restore calm across strategic locations in Ibadan.

“The officer responsible for the discharge of the firearm has been taken into custody and, along with other members of the team, is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation,” said CSP Adewale Osifeso, spokesperson for the Command.

The statement notes that the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, has been assigned to lead the investigation, and the Command has assured the public of transparency and full accountability in the process.

The Oyo State Police Command extended its condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to remain calm as the investigation continues.”
