A devastating school shooting has rocked Austria’s second-largest city, Graz, leaving ten people dead—including the gunman, thereby prompting national mourning.
Authorities confirmed that the attack occurred around 10:00 a.m. local time at Dreierschützengasse High School.
Among the victims are six females and three males, all believed to be students or staff.
The tenth fatality is the suspected shooter, who reportedly took his own life in a school bathroom following the attack.
Meanwhile, Police have identified the assailant as a 21-year-old former pupil of the school.
Officials say he had not completed his education at Dreierschützengasse and used two legally owned firearms during the assault.
Interior Minister Karl Nehammer called the shooting one of the darkest days in recent Austrian history. Chancellor Christian Stocker declared the incident a “national tragedy” and announced three days of official mourning across the country.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to understand the motive behind the attack.
