BREAKING: Nigerian Workers Declare Nationwide Strike To Protest Ajaero’s Imo Attack
The organised labour comprising of Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria has declared a plan for a nationwide strike over the beating and abduction of their President, Joe Ajaero.
The strike scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, was made known in a press briefing on Friday, November 3, 2023.
According to the leaders of the joint union, the Federal Government is given a six-point demand, including the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, and Area Commander, among other officials, for their alleged complicity in the brutalisation and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers.
Recall that the NLC president was in Owerri on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, to mobilize Imo workers for a protest rally in the state over an alleged violation and abuse of the rights and privileges of workers by the state government.
During this protest a scuffle broke out which led to the injuries sustained by Comrade Ajaero, he is now reportedly being flown abroad for better treatment.
The Imo State Police Command denied arresting the labour leader.
The Imo governor also denied having hands in Ajaero’s ordeal and accused him of interfering in the state’s politics.
Uzodimma made the accusation on Thursday after receiving the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag from President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
“The National President of the NLC is from Imo State and has not been able to demarcate the difference between being a national leader of an organisation and then an interested party in local politics,” Uzodimma said.
Ajaero, during a press briefing earlier in the week, had accused the Imo State government of “violating the rights of the Nigerian workers in the state,” and therefore vowed to mobilise members of the union in the state for a total strike.
