President Bola Tinubu has celebrated the leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a shining example of integrity, discipline, and dedicated service to Nigeria.
In a statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised Pa Fasoranti for a lifetime of commitment to national progress and democratic ideals.
President Tinubu noted that the elder statesman had made lasting contributions in education, politics, and the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. He also highlighted Fasoranti’s academic journey through institutions such as University of Ibadan, University of Hull, and Maguire University in Sydney, Australia.
The statement further recognised his impact on the education sector through decades of teaching and the establishment of notable schools in Ondo State, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy, which he founded in honour of his late wife.
Describing Pa Fasoranti as one of the remaining loyalists of late sage Obafemi Awolowo, the President recalled his political activities in the defunct Action Group and the Unity Party of Nigeria.
Tinubu also reflected on Fasoranti’s tenure as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of late Adekunle Ajasin, noting that he earned widespread respect for his transparency and prudent management of public resources.
The President commended the elder statesman’s courage during the pro-democracy struggle against military rule, as well as his continued efforts in promoting Yoruba unity and development through Afenifere.
He also acknowledged some of the painful experiences Pa Fasoranti has endured over the years, including surviving an assassination attempt during the military era and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the support and prayers he received from the elder statesman throughout his political career, especially during the presidential campaign, while praying for continued good health, strength, and peace for the centenarian.
