The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has cautioned journalists to be vigilant and professional in their reportage as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The union urged media practitioners to diligently fact-check all information from political actors in order not to fall into the trap of spreading fake news, misinformation, or disinformation.
This warning formed part a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s monthly congress held at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The congress, which was presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola, deliberated on key issues affecting journalism, politics, governance, and the traditional institution in the state.
The congress expressed deep concern about the weaponization of false narratives during political campaigns and emphasized the need for journalists to uphold the ethics of the profession in the face of political pressure, reiterating that the credibility of the media hinges on the accuracy and truthfulness of its content, especially in an election season.
In a show of respect, the union condoled with Governor Seyi Makinde, the people of Ibadan, and the royal family on the passing of Oba Olakulehin. It praised the peaceful reign of the late monarch, describing his time on the throne as one of relative calm and progress in the city. The congress offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
The congress also hailed the unique ascension tradition of the Olubadan stool, which allows for a clear and structured succession without contention, emphasising that such a system promotes stability and should serve as a model for other traditional institutions in the country.
On infrastructure, the NUJ lauded the Oyo State Government for its ongoing road construction projects across the state, particularly the Ibadan Circular Road, saying such initiatives were vital for economic development and ease of movement within and outside the state capital.
Internally, the congress advised members of the union to regularise their membership with both the state and national secretariats, stating that it was essential for eligibility to serve as delegates in the upcoming NUJ Oyo Council elections later this year.
