On December 9, 2025, a breath of fresh air swept across the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) with the inauguration of Comrade Akeem Babatunde Abas, fondly known as Alakime, as Chairman of the council. His emergence marked the beginning of a renewed sense of purpose, energy, and hope among journalists in the state.
Alongside Comrade Abas, other elected executives were also sworn in to steer the affairs of the union. They include Comrade Abiodun Atilola, Vice Chairman; Comrade Temidayo Adu, Secretary; and Comrade Moses Morenikeji, Treasurer. Together, they form a leadership team poised to reposition the union for growth and relevance.
Thirty days into his administration, the achievements recorded under Abas’ leadership have underscored his passion for members’ welfare and his resolve to lead by example. His hands-on approach and people-oriented leadership style quickly became evident.
One of the earliest interventions of the new chairman was the cleanup of the NUJ Press Centre. The exercise restored order, improved the working environment, and sent a strong signal of his commitment to maintaining a dignified and functional space for journalists.
Within two weeks of his inauguration, Comrade Abas successfully organised what has been described as the most attended Christmas Carol Service in recent times. The event brought together journalists, stakeholders, and friends of the union in an atmosphere of celebration and unity.
Abas’ personal involvement in the planning and execution of the carol service played a critical role in its success. His dedication ensured a colourful, impactful, and memorable celebration that rekindled the spirit of togetherness among members.
Despite being a Muslim, the NUJ Chairman demonstrated an apolitical, non-ethnic, and non-religious approach to leadership by going the extra mile to support the Christmas celebration. This singular act reinforced the values of inclusiveness, tolerance, and mutual respect within the union.
His strong welfarist disposition further reflected in the sponsorship of what many described as an unprecedented Christmas Carol Service. In addition, bags of rice were distributed to journalists across Oyo State as Christmas packages, bringing relief and joy to members during the festive season.
Infrastructure development also received attention under his leadership. The 40KVA generator donated by Engr. Femi Babalola (Jogor) was repaired, to restore steady power supply to the Press Centre. Complementing this effort was the ongoing erection of a permanent generator house strategically located within the Press Centre. This initiative not only enhanced security but also ensured the sustainability of the facility.
In a bid to foster unity and personal connection among members, the council under Abas introduced customised graphic designs to celebrate journalists on their birthdays. This thoughtful initiative strengthened bonds and boosted morale within the union.
Capacity building has remained a major focus of the new administration. Abas secured training initiatives aimed at repositioning journalists in Oyo State for global relevance in the rapidly evolving media landscape.
Notably, the council successfully secured two Artificial Intelligence training programmes for members scheduled for the end of January and 2026. These trainings are designed to equip journalists with modern digital skills necessary for contemporary reporting.
Additionally, Google-sponsored training programmes slated for February 2026 were secured, further demonstrating Abas’ commitment to professional development and innovation in journalism.
In just thirty days, Comrade Akeem Abas has set a clear tone for purposeful leadership anchored on welfare, unity, capacity building, and infrastructural development. His early strides suggest a promising tenure focused on strengthening the NUJ and elevating journalism practice in Oyo State.
