Gov Uzodimma Challenges Journalists to End Fake News in Nigeria
The Imo state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has charged journalists to embrace fact checking skills to stamp out the menace of fake news in Nigeria
Governor Uzodimma, who is also the chairman progressives governors forum, explained that fake news had in different times caused upheavals and distant election process in the country, hence the need for local media to fact check their materials before broadcast.
Governor Uzodimma, while declaring open the 8th Triennial National Delegates’ Conference in Owerri, charged members to uphold the ethics of the profession through objective and unbias reportage as well as provide neutral and inclusive platform to facilitate good governance.
He enjoined members of the pen pushing profession to embrace emancipatory and developmental journalism to hold the government accountable in the interest of the grassroots.
The governor commended the firm commitment of journalists to the profession which according to him has enhanced the stability of the country and lauded the outgoing leadership of the union led by chief Chris Isiguzo for redefining the profession to attain a quantum leap.
Earlier in his address of welcome, National President NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, thanked the governor for hosting the conference and his commitment to to enhancing media role in the development of good governance
Chief Isiguzo while givin his six years journey experience in the saddle, said he had raised the bar of Journalism, through training of members, quality representation of the union across the continents, advising all members to close ranks and work for the development and progress of the union
Highpoint of the ceremony was the investiture of Governor Hope Uzodimma as the grand patron of Nigeria Union of Journalists.
Over one thousand journalists from all the thirty six state councils and Federal Capital Territory are attending the conference
