The Power of Choice – By Apostle Peter Akanji
Choice holds the key to whatever you will become in life. Choice, not chance, determines your destiny. It’s in your power to determine what will either build or ruin your destiny. What you chose yesterday or the path you chose to follow is what you are experiencing in your life today. What you choose today will be what will happen in your life tomorrow. You have no power over where you were born or by whom, but as soon as you are of age, you have the will power over what to do or what not to do.
Even, when God reveals his will for you in any area of your life, He leaves you to decide whether to do it or not. In essence, God respects your will power.
To choose simply means to select, to decide, to pick out from a greater number, to show what one wants, to prefer or to take by preference.
Therefore, choosing simply means decision Choosing suggests that there’s more than one way object or material at stake but you prefer the one you take or do because of the reasons best known to you. For instance, there are many means of transport. It behoves you to choose the one you want if you are traveling over a long distance.
At the same time, there are factors that determine your choice in this respect.

Again, there are many brands of automobiles, but you chose the one you bought because of your preference for it for reasons known to you. If you are a student in a higher institution of learning, you must know what it is to choose, else you will be running another man’s race.
Remember, it is often said friendship is by choice and not by force. If a relationship is not blessing you, then it’s incapacitating you.
Superstition apart, you are where you are today by choice and it is only by choice that you can remain there or change the entire course of your life. You may choose to be a beggar (through laziness) or a lender (through hardworking) . You can choose to be a blessing to this generation or a problem. You may choose to be lazy or industrious. You can choose to live in the past or forget the past to gain the future.
Marriage is also by choice. You decided on who to marry and pursued it until you actualized it for the reasons best known to you. Choices are different. Some men (though born again) prefer tall and slim-built ladies while some will go for robust- looking damsel. Some men like chocolate colour girls while some will settle down for
fair complexioned ones. Some prefer city giris while others will go for village girls. Some will wait for an American/European lady while for some “anything in skirt goes”. In any case, there’s always a reason for doing whatever one does.
If you are a Christian reading this, you choose the church you attend for a reason, and you are still there because of a reason. You know very well that there are other churches around which you could attend, but you stick to that one. But you need to know that if your church cannot change you, you need to change your church. So it’s by choice for you to stay there.
Holding on to God is by choice and it’s the best. There are examples of those that backslide all around us. Doing good is by choice. A life of praise and prayer is also by choice. You could have a million excuses for not living up to expectations. A life of excuses is by choice you could choose to have the number of children you can adequately cater for bring up in the way of the Lord, investing on them to give them a future. On the other hand, you could continue to bring them indiscriminately into the world, believing that when they grow up, they will find their way in life.
It is by choice to marry. Its not a sign of “illuck to be unmarried or celibate, If that is what will give you happiness or enable you to serve God faithfully. It’s not a misfortune to be a single parent or to be brought up by a single parent. Many single parents are happier than some so-called married women with a dysfunctional family. But if you discover that there are other factors or spiritual reasons behind your single status, don’t accept them as your fate. Deal with them straightaway.
Though some ladies have preference in marriage they settle for whoever is available when their choice is not forth coming. Heredity apart, you decide the way you look through your eating habits. For instance, when an obese woman married to a don discovered that the free girls on campus were on rampage to snatch her husband, she quickly ‘repackaged’ herself to look ten years younger to save her marriage.
Everyday we make choices from trivial issues to important matters: the clothes we wear, the kind of toothpaste to use, TV sets and programmes, furniture, house location, choice of school for the children, which bill to settle first, who to discuss with etc. But in all these, there are three main issues in life you’ve got to settle first and they determine whether other choices will be worthwhile or not. Failure to know what to do will tell on your destiny.
THREE MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS
The first and the most important decision in life is your MASTER. Who is your master? Who do you choose to follow. It is advisable to choose life,¹ by following Jesus.
Choose you this day whom ye will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord”.
Choose not to die’, choose to live and fulfil your destiny. Choose the path of righteousness. Choose to live and die in peace. Choose to live above demonic influence and manipulation. Choose to know God.
Heaven is waiting to rejoice on account of you. Why not cause a celebration today in the presence of God by giving your life to Jesus. Your life can never know peace until you turn it over to Jesus. Don’t procrastinate. “Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth before the difficult days come”.
Choose to find out what it takes to get and marry the partner ordained by God for your life.”
Dear reader, one more time, you are invited to be a member of God’s family. Let God be your father! Decide now.
The second most important decision is your MISSION. What is your mission on earth? You need to find out why you are here on earth? What’s the divine purpose for you? What is God’s agenda for your life? What does He want you to do? There are more than 6 billion people on the planet earth today and God’s purposes for everyone of us is different. Find out His will for you. You can’t afford to run your life any how. You are not an accident of nature. God had you in mind before you were conceived in your mother’s womb. Things may look as if you are on earth by mistake; but friend, the opposite is the case.
You are not a misfit. You are somebody created in the image and likeness of God. For you not to regret your life, ask God in prayer what originally He planned for your life. Knowing this will definitely change the course of your life, and doing it will make you fulfil your God-given destiny. Therefore, above all there’s to do, choose to find out your mission on earth. God forbid that you have been doing another man’s assignment. If yes, make a U-turn today.
The third most important decision is your MATE That is your spouse. Dear reader, there’s somebody originally created specially for you by God, to team up with you as your life partner. Choose to find out what it takes to get and marry the partner ordained by God for your life.
If you are not married yet or you are a willing single parent, do not rush yourself into any serious relationship. Know what it is to obtain the favour of God. Choose to have the Ultimate. Your mate will either get you to your place of destiny or strangulate your life. But if you are already married, God respects your spouse whether believer or not. You have already made your choice. Appreciate it. Maintain it. Enjoy it and be proud of it. In essence, your MASTER, MISSION and eventually MATE form the bases of other important decisions you make in life. It should be in that order for your life to be orderly. If you start from the rear or the middle, you will have to live with some unnecessary challenges for the rest of your life, unless you put some things in place. Those things will be fully discussed later in this series.
