Credible Election, Bedrock of Democracy – Agboke
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has identified credible election as the bedrock of democracy.
Agboke stated this at the 2024 Osun NUJ Press Week Public Lecture in Osogbo.
Speaking on the theme, “2026/2027 Elections: Achieving Credible Electoral Process In Osun State”, Dr. Agboke noted that achieving the goal requires the collaboration of all stakeholders, political parties, security agencies, civil society, and most importantly, the media.
He pointed out that to ensure credible electoral process, every eligible voter in the state is registered, and participate without hindrance.
Agboke explained that electorates needed to be educated to understand their rights, the voting process, and the importance of peaceful participation in election.
While expressing concern over the growing trust deficit in Nigeria’s electoral process, Dr. Agboke observed that stakeholders have shifted their attention from monitoring the electoral process to targeting INEC officials, hoping to influence the outcome of elections.
He maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was committed to ensuring that every election conducted in Nigeria reflects the will of the people.
Earlier, the Osun State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu said, it is the responsibility of all stakeholders in the country to play their roles to ensure that the election is peaceful, fair and credible.
