Nigeria’s entertainment industry is mourning the death of veteran actor, dramatist, filmmaker and academic, Dr. Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.
Family sources confirmed that the respected thespian died on Friday, bringing to an end a distinguished career that spanned more than six decades in theatre, film and academia.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he honed his skills and rose to prominence in the performing arts.
He gained national recognition for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s acclaimed stage play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that remains one of the most celebrated performances in Nigerian theatre.
Dr. Oyewo also featured in notable films including Saworoide and Sango, earning widespread admiration for his contributions to Yoruba theatre, Nollywood and the preservation of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Beyond the stage and screen, he built an outstanding academic career. He obtained a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University.
Through his teaching, research and mentorship, he helped nurture generations of actors, playwrights and scholars.
Tributes have continued to pour in from colleagues, former students and stakeholders in the creative industry, who describe him as a cultural icon whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
