Veterinary surgeons in Osun State have marked the 2026 World Veterinary Day with a practical workshop focused on emergency procedures, particularly blood transfusion techniques, as part of efforts to enhance clinical competence.
The event, held at Awosuru Veterinary Clinic, brought together practitioners from both public and private sectors for hands-on sessions aimed at improving response to critical animal health situations.
Speaking at the workshop, the Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Osun State branch, Dr. N.O. Kolawale, said the initiative was designed to equip participants with practical “tricks and tips” in emergency interventions, with facilitators demonstrating real-life applications to strengthen both field and clinical practice.
A guest clinician from the University of Ibadan Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Dr. Olawale Ishola, who led the technical session, aligned his presentation with the global theme, “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.” He emphasised the importance of blood transfusion in veterinary medicine, noting its critical role in managing life-threatening cases and improving survival outcomes in animals.
The Chief Host, Dr. Alaba Towoju, represented by Dr. Moses Olayemi, alongside other stakeholders, highlighted the vital role veterinarians play in safeguarding animal health, ensuring food safety, and protecting public health, while stressing the need for continuous professional development.
The well-attended workshop also provided a platform for knowledge sharing and professional collaboration, reinforcing the commitment of veterinary practitioners in Osun State to align research with practical service delivery.
