A media personality and publisher, Beady Nnanna, has alleged that her sister, Blessing Okolie, died as a result of medical negligence following a fibroid surgery at a private hospital in Lagos State.
Okolie, 44, reportedly underwent surgery on March 28, 2026, after seeking treatment for a severe fibroid condition. According to Nnanna, concerns had been raised about the standard of the hospital prior to the procedure, but the deceased insisted on using the facility based on a recommendation.
Nnanna said although the surgery was initially declared successful, her sister began experiencing persistent abdominal pain days later, accompanied by swelling. Despite repeated requests for further examination, including a scan, the hospital allegedly dismissed the concerns.
A scan conducted at an external facility later reportedly revealed a metallic object in Okolie’s abdomen. She was subsequently taken back for another surgery, during which the object—allegedly a pair of scissors—was removed.
However, her condition continued to deteriorate. Nnanna claimed that the hospital lacked adequate emergency support, including power supply for oxygen at a critical moment, prompting her to transfer her sister to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in the early hours of the day.
Okolie was later admitted for treatment but was confirmed dead shortly after.
The family said they spent over N2 million on medical bills and have reported the case to the police, calling for a full investigation and justice.
They also urged the government to shut down the hospital to prevent further incidents.
As of the time of filing this report, the hospital management had yet to officially respond to the allegations.
