Oyo State Police Command has tendered an unreserved apology to an Ibadan based legal practitioner, Mr.Oluwatope Olaniyan, who was allegedly brutalized and unlawfully detained by some police officers during a midnight operation in the State Capital.
The incident occurred on Sunday, 6th July 2025, when police officers reportedly stormed Mr. Olaniyan’s neighborhood at around 2 o’clock in the dead of the night, arresting several residents without warrants.
Mr. Olaniyan, who is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan Branch, said he had approached the officers calmly to inquire about the legality of the arrests, but was allegedly assaulted, humiliated, and detained by the police.
Following a petition by the NBA Ibadan Branch, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Mr Johnson Adenola, convened an investigative meeting yesterday at the Police Headquarters, Eleyele.
At the meeting, the police officers who were involved, a Chief Superintendent of Police, the Chief Superintendent of Police,CSP Tunji Gambari, an officer simply called Akeem, and Mr. Jubril Ololo, claimed that the lawyer obstructed their work.
However ,the Officers accounts were found to be inconsistent and lacking evidence.
The NBA delegation, led by the Vice Chairman and the Human Rights Committee, firmly defended Mr. Olaniyan, describing the officers’ claims as false and an attempt to cover up police misconduct.
In a twist of event, one of the officers, Mr. Jubril Ololo, claimed he was a PhD holder, but failed to provide proof when questioned.
At the end of the session, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Adenola, apologized on behalf of the Nigeria Police Force and promised disciplinary action against the officers involved.
The NBA Human Rights Committee says it will monitor the internal disciplinary process to ensure justice is served.
At the time of filling this report, the Oyo State Police Command has not come up with any statement and efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer Mr Adewale Osifeso for reaction, was unsuccessful.
