The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the death of Mrs. Zainab Joy Momodu, the Acting Head of Mission (Chargé d’Affaires ad interim) at the Embassy of Nigeria in Guinea-Bissau.
Mrs. Momodu reportedly passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Military Hospital in Bissau following a brief illness.
In a statement signed by the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, and made available to journalists in Abuja, the late diplomat was described as a hardworking and dedicated public servant who gave her best to the Nigerian Foreign Service.
The Ministry expressed deep sorrow over her sudden passing, which it described as a significant loss to the diplomatic corps and the country as a whole.
Mrs. Momodu began her career in diplomacy in 2010, having been part of the 20th Regular Course of the Foreign Service Academy. Since then, she had served in various capacities at home and abroad, earning a reputation for professionalism and commitment to duty.
The Ministry highlighted her exceptional contributions during her tenure as Acting Head of Mission in Guinea-Bissau, noting that she represented Nigeria with honour and integrity. Her death, the Ministry stated, leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill.
“We mourn a diligent officer whose service reflected the highest standards of the diplomatic profession,” the statement read. “Her legacy of dedication will continue to inspire colleagues and future diplomats.”
The Ministry extended its sympathies to her immediate family, friends, and colleagues, praying for strength and comfort for those affected by the loss. It also prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul.
