A university don, Professor Olayinka Gbotosho, has called on architects in Nigeria to embrace technology and deepen their engagement with philosophical principles in architectural design, in order to remain relevant in the modern era.
Prof. Gbotosho, from the Faculty of Environmental Studies at Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, made the call while delivering the 23rd Inaugural Lecture of the institution.
Speaking on the topic, “In the Cause of Architecture: Philosophy of Architectural Design,” the academic stressed that many architects today lack adequate computer programming literacy. This, he warned, has led to an over-reliance on pre-packaged design materials and software, which may limit creativity and originality in architectural projects.
He emphasized the need for practitioners to adapt to the evolving technological landscape, noting that digital tools, when properly harnessed, can significantly enhance architectural innovation and project efficiency.
“Inaugural lectures like this provide a unique opportunity for scholars to share knowledge that contributes not only to national development but to the advancement of humanity,” Prof. Gbotosho stated.
He also highlighted the importance of critically engaging with the philosophical foundations of architecture, especially in an era increasingly defined by resource scarcity and climate change.
According to him, a deeper philosophical approach to architectural design is necessary to develop sustainable, context-sensitive solutions that respond to both environmental and societal needs.
