President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a “humble servant of God” and a “tireless champion of the poor” whose legacy will endure in the hearts of millions around the world.
In a heartfelt statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President joined Catholics and Christians worldwide in mourning the Pope, whose death comes just days after the Easter celebration.
“His passing, coming just after the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection, is a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians,” President Tinubu said.
Reflecting on Pope Francis’ 12-year papacy, President Tinubu praised his unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and the protection of the vulnerable. From the moment he ascended to the papacy in 2013, Pope Francis called on humanity to embrace mercy, urging the world to see Christ in the faces of the marginalized, the poor, refugees, and migrants.
He challenged the powerful to act with justice, called nations to welcome the stranger, and reminded us that our common home—this Earth—is a gift we must protect for future generations,” Tinubu said.
Describing the late pontiff as an “instrument of peace” and a “steadfast advocate for the developing world,” Tinubu highlighted Pope Francis’ consistent voice against economic injustice and his efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and global harmony.
President Tinubu also recalled his 2025 Easter message, in which he gave thanks for the Pope’s improving health and expressed joy at witnessing his Easter Sunday blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica. “Alas,” he added, “the Lord called him home a day after, making the world lose its most trenchant voice for justice and action against climate change.”
In his message, the President called on the global community to honour Pope Francis not only in mourning but through action—by serving the downtrodden, healing communities, and upholding human dignity.
“May the good Lord, whom he served with all his might, receive him into His eternal bosom,” Tinubu concluded.
On behalf of the Nigerian government and its people, the President extended condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and all Christians mourning the Pope’s passing.
