Persistent Drought : EKSU Professor Arowosoge Predicts Imminent Hunger
The persistent drought in some parts of the country, during this rainy season has been attributed to effect of climate change.
A lecturer in the Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management, Ekiti State University, EKSU Ado Ekiti, Professor Oluwayemisi Arowosoge revealed this in Ado-Ekiti.
Professor Arowosoge said the several weeks of rain seizure that led to crops infested with insects and drying on farm might result to hunger.
The University Lecturer who decried high cost of foodstuffs, advised every family to engage in backyard farming in order to reduce hunger in the country.
While condemning aggressive cutting of trees for charcoal making, the Don proposed massive tree planting as one of the solutions to mitigate effect of the climate change.
Professor Arowosoge also suggested irrigation assistance from government in the south west zones for all-year round farming to ensure food security.
She noted that high cost of irrigation facilities may not be within the reach of peasant farmers, who contribute to 70 percent of food production in the country, hence the need for assistance from concerned authorities.
