The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to increase the monthly subvention to the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) to enable the agency to implement the new minimum wage recently adopted in the state.
The appeal was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the union’s monthly congress held on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan. The meeting was presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola.
The congress commended the state government for approving and implementing the new minimum wage, describing the move as a progressive step toward improved workers’ welfare. However, it emphasized the need for increased financial support to state-owned agencies like BCOS to ensure effective compliance.
The union also addressed the recent rumors of herdsmen invasion in parts of Oyo State. While noting that the alarm had been dispelled by the police, it urged the government and security agencies to intensify surveillance to forestall any potential security threats.
Furthermore, the congress acknowledged the efforts of Governor Makinde and security agencies in curbing criminal activities but advised that the latest security concerns should prompt a strategic reassessment for better protection of lives and property.
In addition, the NUJ applauded both federal and state governments for ongoing improvements in road infrastructure and called for sustained efforts to enhance road safety across the country.
