Ondo Police, Amotekun Corps in Show of Force Over Custody of Theft Suspect

A tense altercation broke out on Sunday afternoon between operatives of the Ondo State Security Network, known as the Amotekun Corps, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force over the custody of a suspect allegedly involved in a motorcycle theft.

According to an injured Amotekun officer, the incident began when a complainant reported a missing motorcycle at their office. Acting swiftly, Amotekun operatives were able to recover both the stolen motorcycle and apprehend the suspect linked to the theft.

However, shortly after the arrest, police officers reportedly arrived at the scene and demanded that the suspect be handed over to them—leading to a heated confrontation between the two security outfits.

In response to the situation, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, downplayed the incident, referring to it as a “minor misunderstanding.” He confirmed that after a dialogue facilitated by commanders from both agencies, the suspect and the recovered motorcycle were eventually handed over to the police, in the spirit of inter-agency cooperation.
