The Ondo State Local Government Pension Transitional Department (LGPTD) is set to begin the verification and issuance of digital identification cards for all Local Government and Primary School pensioners across the state starting Monday, May 12, 2025.
This initiative, announced in a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Local Government Service Commission, Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Olayinka Femi-Idris, was made available to the public through media channels in Akure.
According to the circular, the move aims to address long-standing identification challenges faced by pensioners and to shield them from undue harassment by tax and rating officers. The digital ID cards are also expected to enhance security, reduce fraud, and streamline the identification process for pensioners.
The production of digital identification cards for pensioners, which has been in high demand, will help eliminate the undue harassment of our senior citizens by tax officers, enhance the process of pensioner identification, and prevent identity theft and fraud,” the statement read.
Each ID card will include vital biometric and personal information, such as the pensioner’s name, pensioner number, date of birth, fingerprint impression, and a passport-style photograph. The cards will be printed on durable plastic and feature advanced security elements, including the official insignia of Ondo State.
What Pensioners Need to Know
To receive their ID cards, pensioners are required to undergo biometric verification, which includes a photo and fingerprint capture, as well as a review of existing personal data on the payment platform.
The following documents must be presented at designated collation centers within each Local Government Area (LGA):
Approval letter from the Local Government Pension Transitional Department
National Identification Card issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)
Bank Verification Number (BVN) printout from the pensioner’s bank
For pensioners residing abroad, the government will launch a dedicated online portal. The portal will support data entry, document uploads, and a brief live video recording—serving as a remote “proof of life.”
