NHRC Visits Ogun Assembly, Seeks Legislative Measure Against Gender Violence
Lawmakers in Ogun State have been urged to strengthen legislative measures to protect the rights of women and other vulnerable groups
State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Mrs. Olayinka Odibe made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Ogun State House of Assembly in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
The NHRC State Coordinator who expressed concern over the alarming global rate of violence against women and girls also advocated the need for governments to invest more in preventive and educational programmes towards addressing the root causes of gender-based violence.
Responding, The Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr Oludaisi Elemide reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to combat gender-based violence in the State through effective legislation and other quasi- judicial activities.
Mr Elemide, who was represented by his Deputy, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi said efforts would be geared towards creating the needed public awareness and educational, particularly in the rural areas, to sensitize communities to the dangers of gender-based violence as well as the legal protections available to victims. 
He also promised the support of the State legislature in promoting initiatives to strengthen women’s rights and empower survivors of gender-based violence,through a multi-sectoral approach involving the government agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders.
