The Ondo State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists ,NAWOJ has urged women across the state to continue supporting and uplifting one another while advocating greater opportunities, equity and protection for women in all sectors of society.
In a statement signed by the Chairperson of Ondo NAWOJ, Comrade Tola Gbadamosi JP, and the Secretary, Comrade Oluwatosin Ighoteguono, to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, the association said the annual celebration serves as a reminder of the resilience, achievements and contributions of women, as well as the need to intensify efforts toward ensuring fairness, inclusion and equal opportunities.
The association noted that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” underscores the importance of women empowering one another through collaboration, support and the sharing of opportunities that can help more women grow and succeed.
Ondo NAWOJ therefore encouraged its members and other women across the state to remain united and continue to support one another in their personal and professional journeys.
The association emphasized the importance of experienced women guiding and encouraging younger professionals in the media industry so they can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of the profession.
Ondo NAWOJ also advocated greater equity, safety and recognition for women journalists, noting that many female media professionals still face harassment, discrimination and other forms of intimidation in the course of carrying out their duties.
The association called on government, media organisations and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the rights of women journalists and other women are adequately protected.
It further urged authorities to create an enabling environment that allows women to carry out their professional responsibilities without fear, intimidation or discrimination.
Ondo NAWOJ also emphasized the need for more women to be given opportunities to occupy positions of authority and leadership in both public and private sectors.
According to the association, increasing the number of women in decision-making positions will help ensure that policies and programmes reflect the needs and aspirations of women and girls.
The association therefore called on the Ondo State Government and other stakeholders to provide more seats for women in governance and leadership structures across the state.
Ondo NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating gender equality, professional growth and the protection of women journalists, while urging women to remain resilient, support one another and continue to raise their voices for fairness, justice and equal opportunities.
