Nollywood superstar and beloved filmmaker Funke Akindele has broken her silence on why she was noticeably absent from the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), one of the most anticipated events in the African entertainment industry.
In a heartfelt message shared with fans, Akindele acknowledged the expectations surrounding her appearance at the prestigious awards, calling it “one of the biggest nights in our industry.” However, she revealed that a deeply personal family matter took precedence, prompting her to stay away from the spotlight.
The truth is, I couldn’t make it because I needed to be with my family,” she wrote. “Something very personal came up, and I had to choose what mattered most in that moment. As much as I love my craft and my fans, family will always come first.”
Her candid post struck a chord with fans and fellow industry colleagues, many of whom took to social media to express their support and admiration for her decision. Known for her professionalism and dedication, Akindele’s absence was felt, but her sincerity has only deepened the respect her fans hold for her.
Despite not walking the red carpet, Akindele made it clear she was cheering from afar. “To everyone who was nominated, who won, who showed up looking stunning—I’m so proud of you,” she said.
She ended her message on a hopeful note, promising to return “stronger and better, by God’s grace.”
