The Federal Government has launched a digital portal to simplify teachers’ registration, licensing, and professional development.
The initiative also introduces stricter accountability and safety measures in Nigerian classrooms.
At the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the reforms will professionalise teaching and enforce ethical standards.
A key feature of the new framework is the mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification System where every teacher is mandated to complete before certification or renewal.
“This is not punitive; it is protective,” Alausa said. “It is about safeguarding our children and upholding the moral integrity of our classrooms.”
The minister added that private schools can now confirm the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) clearance of their staff through the portal.
TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, said the platform was part of her 100-day plan to digitise operations. “With this portal, teachers across Nigeria can conveniently register, access their results, and print their certificates from the comfort of their homes without visiting state offices,” she explained.
She also announced changes to the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE). The test will now cover five core areas: foundational mathematics, literacy, digital literacy, safeguarding, and pedagogy. An AI-powered lesson plan generator is expected by October.
