FG Begins Evaluation of Dams Nationwide
In a bid to avert flood disaster which recently happened in Borno as a result of the collapse of a section of the spillway of Alau Dam in Maiduguri, a technical sub-committee of the Federal Government has carried an evaluation on Ikere Gorge Dam, in Oyo state to determine its structural integrity
The sub-committee of the Federal Government on the evaluation of dams in Nigeria has declared Ikere Gorge Dam in Iseyin local government areas of Oyo State as safe
The technical sub-committee comprised of inter-ministerial technical members with the mandate by the to undertake detailed assessment of Dams in Nigeria to determine their impact on downstream as well as the social and environmental conditions on riparian communities, declared that the 41-year-old Ikere Gorge Dam was in good condition after physical examination.
The leader of the Sub-committee and Director of Dams and Reservoirs at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Ali Ibrahim noted that findings on the dam would form a robust action plan that would help to combat the challenges facing the dam structure in the country,
Ibrahim, highlighted the challenges faced by Ikere Gorge Dam to include operational and maintenance.
Project Manager, Ikere Gorge Dam, Mrs. Oluyemi Adekunle, who expressed excitement at the federal government’s proactive step to restructure the dam, noted that the Ikere Gorge Dam would function optimally when the job is delivered.
