The Society for Animal Rights Protection (SARP) has warned Nigerians to desist from engaging in sexual activities with animals, stressing that such acts are punishable under the law with a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.
The non-profit and non-governmental organisation, which focuses on the promotion of animal welfare and prevention of cruelty, said it was concerned about rising reports of bestiality in some parts of the country.
Speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of SARP, Dr. Ibikunle Faramade, explained that bestiality, though not a new concept, is a dangerous human practice that undermines both morality and public health.
He drew attention to Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code, which explicitly criminalises sexual intercourse with animals, prescribing a 14-year jail term for anyone found guilty of the offence.
According to Dr. Faramade, bestiality represents a gross violation of human ethics and societal values, stressing that the act not only degrades human dignity but also inflicts suffering on animals.
He cautioned Nigerians against allowing emotional attachment to pets or domestic animals to evolve into sexual relationships, warning that such behaviour is unacceptable both legally and morally.
The SARP boss further stated that bestiality contravenes the teachings of all major religions, which forbid sexual perversions and condemn acts considered unnatural.
Dr. Faramade also raised public health concerns, noting that intimate contact with animals could serve as a breeding ground for new diseases, including epidemics and pandemics.
He recalled that several outbreaks in human history have been linked to unhealthy interactions with animals, insisting that Nigerians must not expose society to similar risks.
The animal rights advocate stressed the need for constant awareness campaigns to sensitise the public about the dangers of bestiality and the severe penalties awaiting offenders under Nigerian law.
He further urged law enforcement agencies to be vigilant and ensure that individuals caught in the act are prosecuted to serve as deterrence to others.
SARP reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding animal rights in Nigeria while also protecting society from the health and moral hazards associated with bestiality.
