Customs Interceptes Foreign Currencies Worth N17 million at Nigeria-Benin Border
The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has intercepted foreign currencies worth 17 million naira during the search of vehicles going through the Nigeria – Benin Republic border.
The Customs Area Controller, Ogun 1 Area command, Mr Mohammed Shuaibu made this known to journalists at Idi Iroko while handing over the cash to operatives of the Economic Financial and Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Mr Shuaibu said no arrest was made with the seizure, adding that non disclosure of the cash to the relevant authorities contravened the country’s Anti-money laundering Act 2022 and the foreign exchange monitoring and miscellaneous Provisions, Act, 1995.
Mr Shuaibu acknowledged the inter agency collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service, the EFCC and other sister agencies in line with the policy thrust of the Federal Government enforcing standards along the international corridor.
Also, the EFCC Head of Investigation, Zone 2, Lagos, Mr Oguzi Moses described the interception as a laudable effort by Customs to stop illicit financial activities through the borders.
He promised that the EFCC would conduct a thorough investigation and uphold due process in handling the matter.
