Ogun Braces Up to Tackle Rural Emergency
Ogun State, in collaboration with the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System, NEMSAS, has unveiled plans to extend the provision of Rural Emergency Services and Maternal Transport to 30 communities in 6 local government areas of the state to strengthen the efforts at reducing maternal mortality among the people.
The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker who made this known in Abeokuta at an inception meeting with NEMSAS officials said the collaboration with the Federal government would also improve the access to effective and efficient rural healthcare services.
Coker appealed to Pregnant women in the State to embrace the intervention involving the provision of specialized tricycles to move patients to primary health care centers nearest to them, noting that the pilot scheme of the initiative in Odeda local government area had been impressive. 
The Commissioner also renewed government’s commitment to improving the healthcare of all residents, particularly women across the state through the free delivery health care services for pregnant women tagged ‘Ibidero’ among other interventions.
NEMSAS team leader, Ms Tyra Rom, had explained that the partnership on enhancing the rural emergency services and maternal transport initiative was focused on reducing the challenges faced by rural dwellers, particularly pregnant women, in accessing quality healthcare services.
Rom said the programme, supported by the world bank through IMPACT Project, would support 15 states with Emergency Medical Services in the area of assets, capacity and financial resources to cater for 1.7 million pregnant rural dwellers in 15 states of the federation by December, 2025.
