Sharing is caring!

Worried by the incessant carnage arising from petrol tankers accidents across the country, a Non-Governmenral Organization, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has called for an end to the national tragedy.

The group which expressed sadness the last week tanker accident in Jigawa State claiming about 170 lives with several others shospitalised for serious injuries sustained, advocated an improved method of distributing petroleum products across the Country other than through tankers

In a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator of the Group Alh. Ibrahim Abdullahi and the National Secretary Dr. Nasir Balogun the Group noted that the movement of petrol tankers with products for long hours on long distances and inadequate surpervision process by NUPENG was responsible for the sad situation

It however called for immediate halt to the lapses inorder to save the lives of the people; adding that most petrol tanker drivers do not rest when exhausted during their journies. The Group called on the Federal Ministry of Transportation and Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources to synergise and evolve better distribution strategies for petroleum distribution in Nigeria that would ‘nip-in-the-bud’ frequent fall of Petrol Tankers leading to killing of alot of people.

Federal and State Governments should collaborate with Media Organizations in sensitisation programmes and advertisements featuring the relay of jingles on the electronic media platforms in various local languages across the Nation on the dangers inherent in scooping of petroleum products by ignorant people whenever any petrol tanker falls on the roads – warning that it is suicidal to continue to do so.”
